In this special one-day pre-conference workshop, based on Dr. Yapko’s book, The Discriminating Therapist: Asking “How” Questions, Making Distinctions, and Finding Direction in Therapy, we will look at people through the lens of cognitive style and HOW they make the choices they make. We will especially focus on what they failed to either notice or discriminate in their global response to some circumstance. From this gentler perspective, we can focus on the roles of missing skills or incorrect information relevant to making better decisions instead of simply pathologizing people. Through carefully constructed “how” questions that reveal the client’s ineffective decision-making framework, the goals of therapy quickly become clearer and the likelihood of hitting well defined therapy targets increases. The merits of hypnosis as a vehicle of delivering these well-targeted interventions will be considered in detail.

To paraphrase psychologist Paul Watzlawick on communication, "You cannot not suggest." So let's make those suggestions with thoughtfulness and expertise. Regardless of your discipline, form of practice, and theoretical orientation, you likely work with depressed people. Whether or not we use formal hypnosis in our work, we are continually influencing our clients in a variety of helpful and unhelpful ways through intentional and unintentional suggestion; language is powerful. This workshop provides a collection of informative and powerful tools for helping you understand and utilize suggestion and direction in the service of helping those with depression.

    A FREE LECTURE.

    TIME: 6:30p.m.
LOCATION: Green Hall, Alliant International University,
10455 Pomerado Road, San Diego, CA. 92131

As advances are made in better understanding the power of focus in shaping one’s subjective perceptions and even physiology, the field of hypnosis has played an especially important role in this ongoing process of discovery. Despite too many clinicians’ terribly misinformed dismissal of hypnosis as little more than a gimmick, in fact hypnosis has evolved a strong scientific basis for its insights into neuroscience, cognition, suggestive language and information processing, placebo and nocebo responses, the therapeutic alliance, and more. When therapists are looking for highly effective tools to enhance treatment efficacy, hypnosis should be at or near the top of the list. After all, don’t clients inevitably learn better when they’re focused, relaxed, and empowered to use more of their own innate resources? Hypnosis isn’t a therapy – it’s a vehicle for delivering therapy in a more focused and experiential way.

The study of the science and art of clinical hypnosis begins with the recognition that influence is inherent in the therapy process. Far more complex, though, are the deeper questions related to how one person can identify and mobilize the resources that make success possible in some desired domain, such as the acquisition of personal and interpersonal skills that can strengthen individuals, marriages and families. This lecture will provide an overview of the field and its relevance to sound clinical practice.

Depression is now the single greatest cause of human suffering and disability around the world. Evidence is growing that biology is less a factor in depressions spread while social forces must be recognized as the greater factor. In this one-day presentation we will explore the evidence that depression is much more a social than medical problem and consider the implications of that recognition for effective intervention. Specific skills and strategies for managing and even preventing depression will be presented.
