Focusing on Individual Strengths

As a clinical psychologist, my focus has always been on people as individuals, not their diagnostic labels.

I have focused on accessing and developing people’s strengths and resources.

I believe most people are doing the best they know how, but it’s what they don’t know, or what they know that isn’t so, that causes them distress.

Contrary to most therapy approaches that look for explanations for why someone is the way they are, my work focuses instead on how people can learn to do things more effectively.

A few photos and thoughts from the 2023 Evolution of Psychotherapy Conference

The Evolution of Psychotherapy Conference 2023 is now behind us but we wanted to share a few photos and some thoughts…

It felt different to us this year with so many of the luminaries no longer at the meeting. The numbers of participants was also much less than in previous years prior to COVID. We were initially skeptical of being in a crowd this size, but are happy to report we remained healthy and hope everyone else did as well.

A highlight for us was Martin Seligman’s keynote address on his work with positive psychology and his new interest in the area of artificial intelligence (AI). It had been some time since Michael and Marty had seen each other and the affectionate re-connection was heartwarming.

Michael had the opportunity to share his work in various formats (speech, panel, workshop) which is always rewarding. It is especially exciting to expose new students to the unique and pragmatic perspectives of Michael’s work.

It was WONDERFUL to see friends and colleagues and past students whom we haven’t seen in years.  And, it was a treat to finally get to meet students whom we had only met on Zoom these past several years.

Diane was a moderator for several sessions including some of Michael’s so she’d pop up on stage every once in awhile. That’s how our friend and colleague Dr. Susan Pinco captured the photo below. Thanks, Susan!
