Self-Help And Depression
Optimized for printing
Depression can affect any human being on the planet, arising from a complex interplay between biological vulnerabilities, environmental and social conditions, and personal psychology. The potential to be overwhelmed by life events and/or our own imperfect mental and physical makeup is ever present in all of us. Despite our vulnerabilities, though, not everyone gets depressed, even during truly hard times. Some people seem to cope better than others with life stresses, and they have taught us a great deal about the skills all people can learn to keep depression at bay.
The skills required to navigate oneself through the often stormy seas of life are not just absorbed magically from the atmosphere. For depressed people, or those at risk for depression, they are especially important skills to strive to learn and they are the very skills that Dr. Yapko teaches in his therapy sessions with clients. He has also made them available in various books and CDs, including those described on this website .
Dr. Yapko’s materials can be used both as professional clinical training tools that can teach the artistry of hypnotic and strategic approaches to therapy, and as self-help aids to make it as easy as possible for all people to benefit from the explosion of great insights derived from research into the nature of depression and its effective treatments. Empowering people is a vital part of treatment. Clinicians want and need to have therapeutic strategies ready to implement when they identify specific targets for intervention. And, self-help is an essential part of overcoming depression, even when someone is already in therapy. After all, each person has to be responsible for learning and mastering the skills of managing themselves, whether it’s one’s food intake, getting adequate sleep and physical exercise, or managing one’s mood. Dr. Yapko’s materials for treating depression can help you identify and learn the skills that can most benefit your clients, thereby encouraging you to feel empowered, too.

| Sleeping Soundly |

Difficulty falling or staying asleep, or having non-rejuvenating sleep, is termed "insomnia." While there can be many different medical and emotional factors that can cause or exacerbate insomnia, one of the most common is the "spinning around and around" of anxiety-producing thoughts, a stressful pattern called "rumination." It is vital to achieving good quality sleep to reduce rumination by managing your thoughts and feelings skillfully. The hypnosis session contained on this CD can help you reduce rumination, fall and stay asleep more easily, and thereby develop good, restorative sleep.
This CD's first track provides an overview of insomnia and its relationship to the way you think and problem-solve. The second track provides a formal hypnosis session for you to listen to, experience, and learn from while developing the ability to sleep well. The hypnosis session is soothing, supportive, and provides an easy path to follow into a good night's sleep.

| The Case of Mike: Hypnosis and Building Resources |
| |
|
|

Watch Now!
|
In this informative DVD, viewers have a chance to look on as Dr. Yapko helps Mike, a young husband and father, turn the first major corner in overcoming his moderate to severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. As the session opens, Mike is rigidly oriented toward the past, regularly reliving the memories and being flooded with the images of the violent abuse he suffered at the hand of his father. As he describes his predicament, “It just seems like I’m stuck in a gutter and can’t get out.”
Maintaining a clear focus on the skills and resources Mike will need to get out of that gutter, Dr. Yapko artfully steers the session away from the pain of the past to orient Mike to the positive possibilities of the future. It is a magic moment when, at the end, Mike spontaneously laughs and says, “I feel real good!” 20 months later, Mike reports he has been doing better and better, a testimonial to the power of this dynamic session.
Prior to the session Dr. Yapko is interviewed by the hosts of the “Brief Therapy Inside Out” series, of which this session is a part, and following the session Dr. Yapko is asked to explain key aspects of the intervention with Mike. This is a superb teaching tape for those who want to learn the intricacies of Dr. Yapko’s hypnotic and strategic therapeutic approaches.
