Clinical Hypnosis

Optimized for printing

Hypnosis is a sophisticated clinical tool which embodies the original “positive psychology” through its emphasis on finding and amplifying peoples’ resources for better living. The word “hypnosis” conjures up many different ideas and reactions in people, particularly if you have never seen it applied skillfully in clinical contexts. If you have seen examples of the ways hypnosis has been used to help people manage pain without drugs, or overcome debilitating psychological symptoms, then you already know something about its clinical value and why it is worth studying in depth. If you have never seen someone deliberately use focusing techniques to better manage physical processes, or seen someone master troublesome symptoms in direct response to “mere” suggestions, then it may be time to indulge your curiosity while learning the skills of hypnosis to enhance your therapeutic effectiveness. If so, visit the teaching schedule pages to see when and where Dr. Yapko’s future trainings in hypnosis will be held.

The study of the science and art of clinical hypnosis begins with the recognition that influence is inherent in the therapy process. Far more complex, though, are the deeper questions related to how one person can instill a belief in someone else that his/her symptoms can diminish, resulting in a recovery, or how someone can suggest to another that he or she evolve a frame of mind that makes success possible in some desired domain. Hypnosis is often an astonishing phenomenon: How can someone suggest an altered physical perception, such as numbness, that makes surgery without chemical anesthesia possible?

Hypnosis is empirically supported by a body of research literature that is broad, deep and fascinating. As the author of a leading text in the field, Trancework: An Introduction to the Practice of Clinical Hypnosis, now in its expanded third edition, Dr. Yapko is fluent in the science of hypnosis and what the research literature has indicated. However, more important than describing the data is the fact that Dr. Yapko articulates and demonstrates how to develop the art of using hypnosis in therapy.

Managing Pain With Hypnosis

This program provides two clinical hypnosis sessions designed to help reduce the suffering associated with painful conditions. In these two separate but related clinical sessions, the listener will be guided through the experience of hypnosis and taught the basic skills associated with hypnotic pain relief.

Hypnosis has repeatedly been shown to be one of the most reliable and least intrusive means for effectively managing physical pain, regardless of its cause. Hypnosis has been used as the principal or sole anesthetic in major surgical procedures, and pain clinics throughout the country routinely employ hypnosis and hypnotically derived methods in their interventions.

Sleeping Soundly

Difficulty falling or staying asleep, or having non-rejuvenating sleep, is termed "insomnia." While there can be many different medical and emotional factors that can cause or exacerbate insomnia, one of the most common is the "spinning around and around" of anxiety-producing thoughts, a stressful pattern called "rumination." It is vital to achieving good quality sleep to reduce rumination by managing your thoughts and feelings skillfully. The hypnosis session contained on this CD can help you reduce rumination, fall and stay asleep more easily, and thereby develop good, restorative sleep.

This CD's first track provides an overview of insomnia and its relationship to the way you think and problem-solve. The second track provides a formal hypnosis session for you to listen to, experience, and learn from while developing the ability to sleep well. The hypnosis session is soothing, supportive, and provides an easy path to follow into a good night's sleep.

The Case of Mike: Hypnosis and Building Resources

Watch Now!

In this informative DVD, viewers have a chance to look on as Dr. Yapko helps Mike, a young husband and father, turn the first major corner in overcoming his moderate to severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. As the session opens, Mike is rigidly oriented toward the past, regularly reliving the memories and being flooded with the images of the violent abuse he suffered at the hand of his father. As he describes his predicament, “It just seems like I’m stuck in a gutter and can’t get out.”

Maintaining a clear focus on the skills and resources Mike will need to get out of that gutter, Dr. Yapko artfully steers the session away from the pain of the past to orient Mike to the positive possibilities of the future. It is a magic moment when, at the end, Mike spontaneously laughs and says, “I feel real good!” 20 months later, Mike reports he has been doing better and better, a testimonial to the power of this dynamic session.

Prior to the session Dr. Yapko is interviewed by the hosts of the “Brief Therapy Inside Out” series, of which this session is a part, and following the session Dr. Yapko is asked to explain key aspects of the intervention with Mike. This is a superb teaching tape for those who want to learn the intricacies of Dr. Yapko’s hypnotic and strategic therapeutic approaches.

The Case of Sol

Watch Now!
Sol is a psychologist seeking help for his long-term depression. Sol's depression has intensified over the years as he has come to face the painful reality that his fantasies of professional and financial success -- culminating in an early retirement -- will go unfulfilled. Sol is deeply self-critical, anxious about how he will cope with his predicament, and doubtful that he can do anything to change his feelings or circumstances.

Sol identifies his "history of being humorous" as his principle means of coping, a resource Michael Yapko uses liberally in his hypnotic intervention. Throughout the hypnosis session, Michael highlights Sol's personal resources. In addition, he clarifies the importance not only of having goals and fantasies, but also of having the internal mechanism for making sure they are realistic, with specific, identifiable steps to eventually bring them to fruition. Michael's pragmatism is evident in his ability to empathetically "push" Sol into redefining who he is and who he can be, quite apart from who he once fantasized about being.

The session is professionally videotaped, and enhanced with helpful introductory graphics describing the patterns of depression/anxiety co-morbidity and the value of hypnosis as a means of intervention. Throughout the tape are numerous subtitles explaining key points in Michael's intervention, and the tape concludes with follow-up information on Sol's subsequent progress. This is an outstanding teaching tape for all those interested in the skilled application of hypnosis in the treatment of complex co-morbid cases.

  The Case of Myra

Maintaining a clear focus on identifying and develoing the skills and resources Myra will need to get out of that mindset, Dr. Yapko gently steers Myra away from limitations of the past to focus on the positive possibilities of the future. Myra is encouraged to be active in developing a new system for making better, more productive choices, and these new decision-making patterns are reinforced through metaphor and the use of humor.

This professionally recorded DVD features subtitles throughout, giving the viewer clear insight into the intentions underlying Dr. Yapko's hypnotic suggestions. The DVD also includes a formal follow-up on Myra's progress. Eight months later, Myra reports she has made many extraordinary changes, a testimonial to the effectiveness of this dynamic session.
